Providing compassionate family-centered care for newborns, children and adults with Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) problems.

James M. Coticchia, MD, FACS

Affectionately known as Dr. Jim to his younger patients, Dr. Coticchia is the Founder President of the Pediatric ENT Clinic of Michigan and a Clinical Professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine. He is a Board Certified and Fellowship-trained Pediatric Otolaryngologist and is among a very few clinician scientists in the region. He has been serving in this region since 2003 and has treated children as well as adults with complex diseases of head & neck.

Dr. Coticchia received his Medical Doctorate from the Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed his internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed a six year residency in Otolaryngology at Barnes Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine. Following his residency training, he completed a two year fellowship in Pediatric ENT at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.  Dr. Coticchia has been an invited speaker both nationally and internationally, has authored numerous book chapters, and has over 50 peer reviewed publications. In addition, Dr. Coticchia has an active interest in the causes of ear infections and sinus infections in children, and has had approximately $1.7 million in research support.

His clinical interests include management of the pediatric airway, acute and chronic ear diseases in children, and hearing loss. He also has a strong interest in pediatric sinus disease and management of acquired and congenital head and neck masses in children. Dr. Coticchia has significant experience dealing with a wide variety of surgical techniques in pediatric otolaryngology and has pioneered new techniques in image guided surgery for management of congenital craniofacial problems in children. In addition, of late, Dr. Coticchia has developed a new minimally invasive technique to eliminate visible scars in children undergoing neck node biopsies.

Clinical Innovations

Pediatric Otolaryngology is a highly specialized field that is relatively new and growing. Dr. Coticchia is a well-recognized leader in this field and has contributed significantly to the growth of this sub-specialty through his clinical as well as research endeavors.

He has developed some unique and novel treatment strategies including:

Endoscopic lymph node biopsy – recently developed an endoscopic cosmetic procedure to biopsy persistent lymph nodes. This procedure is minimally invasive and leaves the patient without a visible scar.

Umbilical Fat Patch Myringoplasty – Small tympanic membrane perforations are relatively common in children. Numerous different techniques have been developed to close these. Our team has recently developed a technique that utilizes umbilical fat to close small tympanic membrane perforations. The technique has a success rate of 98%.

Minimally invasive treatment for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS): CRS is a common problem in children. Our group has developed a very minimally invasive technique which comprises of adenoidectomy, endoscopy directed cultures and oral antibiotics post-surgery. When compared to other techniques such as functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and balloon catheter sinuplasty (BCS), this technique provides less risk and has better outcomes in children with a 92.5% success rate as compared to 83.5% and 81.1% for BCS and FESS respectively.
